Thank you for posting this. I am deeply interested in seeing how the fashion industry adapts to methodologies like computation, mechanics, and hybrid design. The potential for diminishing the chain of waste, and expanding consumer responsibility is immense. I love the idea of a world where we buy less and focus on quality investments, and being proactive in the products that we create. Fashion has such quick turn over that there is no time for R&D, and I can’t wait to see how we can collaborate with programming and bio engineering to completely change the face of how the world is dressed. I am also interested in seeing how this would change the demand for talent in the labor market, it makes me want to go to grad school and delve into material science and its design applications.
I am glad you watched the video! I also find it very inspiring and enlightening. The video illustrates the dynamic nature of the fashion industry as well as the value of designers: bringing innovation and imagination to the world. With the growing popularity of wearable technology, there will be more interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities between the fashion major and other academic field such as engineering. On the other hand, this posts challenges to our T&A academic discipline as well. Teaching students how to make clothing or using a few design software in my personal view is far from enough in the 21st century.
